Hillside Christian School employs a variety of learning experiences for our students, but every subject is taught from a biblical world view, built upon the firm foundation of Scriptural truth.
Textbooks published by A-Beka Book and Bob Jones University provide a basis for learning in several subject areas. The Math-U-See program gives younger students an excellent opportunity to see and comprehend concepts such as place value, geometry and solving for an unknown. Saxon Mathematics challenges older students in advanced content. Handwriting Without Tears workbooks are an enjoyable way for early elementary students to get started forming letters correctly. Texts for science, history and literature are supplemented with plenty of "hands on" opportunities to create and experiment. Field trips and a variety of guest speakers enrich studies.
The entire school comes together each morning for a devotional time. This may include Bible stories, scripture memor,y and learning about Christians around the world. Prayer requests are shared and students and teachers pray for one another, beginning the day with a focus on Jesus.
School programs and monthly memory assigments allow students to build confidence and present their accomplishments. While an emphasis on the 'three R's' and learning from the Bible is maintained, talented Christian instructors may teach music, art, and other enrichment subjects. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills is administered each year for grades 1 through 8.
